Declutteringgggg! (can you tell that I love it?)
Last spring we created a 6 bags in 6 weeks decluttering challenge for you, complete with videos and cute checklists! If you'd like to play the #6in6, you can start the game HERE. If you played last year, you can certainly play again!
We here at Tidy Fairy, along with Marie Kondo, Francine Jay, and a myriad of other home organization professionals and enthusiasts agree: *The* place to start when reorganizing your home is with decluttering.
Yes, that means purging. An easier way to think of it is that you are going to pick the BEST stuff out of what you already have. You are shopping your own closet. You are treasure hunting in your own home. As Francine Jay puts it "...think of it as deciding what to keep, rather than what to throw away."
Marie Kondo advises that you work one catagory at a time, staring with clothes. While we love the Konmari method and agree that this method is the most thorough and likely to prevent relapse, it can be quite time intensive. And sometimes, you just really need to be able to park your car in the crowded garage, or be able to see and reach all of your clothes in an overstuffed closet, or to rearrange your bathroom products so you can see what you have and stop buying duplicates. Sometimes one particular area of your house has become, for you, an emergency clutter situation that needs to be solved ASAP. We get that. Plus, it can be great motivation to continue if you get to see the immediate rewards of totally decluttering and reorganizing one specific space.
Whichever way you choose to start your tidy journey this spring, here are a few decluttering tips!

YOU'RE ALMOST THERE! WooHoo!! Now get ready to conquer...basically everything left in your house (aside from sentimental items, of course). Let's say goodbye to the odds and ends that keep us feeling out of sorts at home!
You may remember Cole from Cole's Bedroom Tidy. He was definitely a minimalist in the end, but you couldn't tell from all the clutter!
We went through all of Cole's items and ended up throwing out almost everything in the medicine cabinet and under the sink. He actually had six toothbrushes! One particular challenge for Cole was removing all of his toiletries from their excess packaging. This allowed him to store them using much less space and he was more likely to use them regularly. This was especially important because a few of his toiletries were on automatic order every month, so if he didn't use them up he got backlogged!
What remained easily fit in his open storage, so it was easy to access and streamlined!
We had Cole "shop his kitchen" for the Coke glass that holds his toothpicks and we found the mason jar for his Q-tips in the garage. The Aveeno bath salts were in a large box, so we threw that away. In general extra packaging will keep you from using everything because it is just a *little* less convenient to access. Studies show that habits you would like to develop have to be almost ridiculously convenient! So if you want to take more baths and use those bath salts, keep em handy!
That's all for Cole's bathroom! What storage challenges do you have for your toiletries?
Spring cleaning for toiletries can be one of the grossest and most satisfying categories! All those expired and unused lotions and potions - buh-bye! It truly feels like magic and is the simplest category to tidy (in my opinion.) Check out my vlog below and I'll lead you through it!

Almost there, friends! You're doing great!
Hello friends! Marlane Deanne here, and here at TidyFairy we are wrapping up our second week of the "6 Bags in 6 Weeks Spring Cleaning Challenge," which is books! This morning I put together a Pinterest board for you full of "gimmick free" bookshelf inspiration. Organization practices I deem too gimmicky for grown-ups:
I also added my sweet bookshelf to the mix! This bookshelf is a Craiglist find, and the blue and pink paint are original from a 1950's child's bedroom. I love how it is a spin on typical cube storage, especially since someone added the little door, which is not original. I keep my sentimental Twilight book collection back there!
To hear more about my books and how I pared down, check out my YouTube video all about decluttering books!
Marlane Deanne here! This week's category is my favorite category because you get to re-introduce yourself to my favorite kinds of friends: Books!

April is upon us, and the spring cleaning challenge is here! This week we challenge you to discard 1 bag (of any size...or box!) of clothes! You can do this!
As you declutter, take it slow. Really consider only one item of clothing at a time. Give it your full decision making attention. Remember that taking breaks is okay. Remember that you have lots of clothes and you will not run out. And keep your personal reason for doing this tidy in focus! Do you want to do less laundry? Do you want to free up more storage space in your drawers? Do you want to make room for new items you plan to acquire? Are you unable to actually see what you do have? Do you want to only have items that make you feel great? Do you just want your closet to look prettier? WHATEVER IT IS, let that personal reason motivate you as you begin this decluttering journey.
The thing you are hunting for in your closet this week is joy. Use your clothes to hone your sense of what you really love. Find that one item of clothing that you just KNOW you're going to keep because you LOVE it. Take it out, touch it, admire it. THAT is the feeling we want you to feel about all of the things that you have.
Don't worry about organization until you have fully decluttered all of your clothes. THEN take stock of your space, and put your beloved items on display!
Alright, let's do this, friends!! PLEASE share your progress with us on social media! Post pictures to our Facebook page, and on Instagram use the hashtags #6in6 and #WHATSINTHEBAG to show off your progress! I'd also super love to see that one favorite piece that you own; the one that showed you joy!
In solidarity, I also did a closet tidy. Here's the (dodgy...I swear I'm learning) video proof. Don't forget to snag the free printable Week One checklist at the bottom of the page! Enjoy!

It's March, almost April, which in Los Angeles means it's starting to get hot punctuated by a few cold days - just so we know who is boss. This also means it's time for SPRING CLEANING and we're here to help you show your closets who is boss!
Our goal is to have you tidy 6 bags in 6 weeks - that's one bag a week! The bags can be large or small - if you're feeling a 40 gallon Hefty bag? Go for it! But a grocery size paper bag works too! Anything to get you thinking the way we think - about things as CATEGORIES - and get you thinking about what you LOVE - and what you don't! We will follow along on the blog, week by week and check out our instagram @ TidyFairyLa for more inspiration!
Show us your bags! Post them to our Facebook page or mention us on Instagram with the hashtag #WHATSINTHEBAG and/or #6IN6! If you want to get a jump start on it, here is a downloadable PDF with a handy dandy checklist so you don't forget a thing!
